DARPA Invests Big in Software R&D

The U.S. Federal Government is by far America's biggest investor in R&D projects in both the private and public sectors. And it's not even close. DARPA alone invests $3.4B+ ANNUALLY without taking back any equity or making a claim to the IP.


DARPA Software Opportunities:

1. Direct2PhaseII: Composable Embedded Software

DARPA's Small Business Programs Office (SBPO) is issuing an SBIR/STTR Opportunity inviting submissions of innovative research concepts in the technical domain(s) of:

  • software composability

  • virtual machines

  • software-defined networks

  • machine learning

  • unmanned platforms

In particular, DARPA is interested in understanding the feasibility of Composable Embedded Software.

DP2 proposals up to: $1,750,000

  • This includes a 9-month base period not to exceed a cost of $750,000 and a 9-month option period not to exceed a cost of $750,000.

  • A separately priced option of up to $250,000 must also be proposed for contractors who would like to be considered for participation in the DARPA Entrepreneurial Investigator Initiative.

Due Date: August 23, 2019



2. Intent-Defined Adaptive Software (IDAS)

  • DARPA is soliciting innovative research proposals in the area of automating the evaluation of software assurance evidence to enable certifiers to rapidly determine that the system risk is acceptable.

  • Proposed research should investigate innovative approaches that enable revolutionary advances in science, devices, or systems.

  • Specifically excluded is research that primarily results in evolutionary improvements to the existing state of practice.

Funding: No fixed limit Due Date: September 10, 2019
