The DoE has a budget of $18.36 Billion for R&D in 2018. In their words, the DoE presses:
"Forward with science in the quest to achieve a secure and sustainable energy future."
Funding scientific research into energy, the department is at the forefront of probing the range of physical sciences. In hand with this aim, the DoE looks to make bold investments in all areas of energy and beyond.
The Department of Energy's Small Business Innovation Research program gives away around $206 Million annually to help small businesses. The remaining funds are distributed via BAA’s for academia, intramural R&D, and companies.
Projects details:
Phase I $150,000- $225,000
Phase II $1,000,000 - $1,500,000
The DOE’s Mission:
DOE’s Mission is to ensure America's security and prosperity by addressing its energy, environmental, and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions.Goal 1: Catalyze the timely, material, and efficient transformation of the nation's energy system and secure U.S. leadership in energy technologies.Goal 2: Maintain a vibrant U.S. effort in science and engineering as a cornerstone of our economic prosperity, with clear leadership in strategic areas.Goal 3: Enhance nuclear security through defense, nonproliferation, and environmental efforts.

HOW IT WORKS:
Critical Early Stage R/R&D fundingThe SBIR & STTR programs provide funding for innovative, early stage researchSBIR & STTR awards provide credibility when seeking investors or partnersSBIR/STTR awards are executed as grants or contractsNo repaymentNo dilution of company equityNo cost sharing is required for Phases I and II. Cost sharing may not be used as an evaluation criteria.
